Handling the Holidays When a Loved One Is on Hospice: A Guide for DFW Families

Reviewed by Agape Home Health & Hospice Nursing Team | Trusted Hospice Care in DFW
If you are navigating the holidays while caring for a terminally ill parent, then this read is specially written for you.

Right now, you might be feeling a mix of guilt and exhaustion that just doesn't match the season.

We know that many families in our community turn to hospice care in the Dallas-Fort Worth region, because they need support managing these complex emotions during such a sensitive time in their  dear lives.

At Agape Hospice, we help you navigate through Anticipated-grief which is defined as the "deep, deep sadness that often begins before an actual loss actually occurs".

The only way to go is through love, surrounded by friends and family
Based on our 30+ years experience serving families in Mesquite and the Dallas regions overall, we want you to have these 4 "permission slips" to help you survive and even find meaning this season. These slips are grounded in our three decades if hospice experience wants to convey:

You are not crazy for feeling different,
You are not selfish for wanting to nurture your mental health during this sensitive time,
You definitely do not have to go through this experience and expect to bounce back at the same time live everyone else.

Love continues in every touch, every glance, every shared breath till we depart

I. Permission to Celebrate or Not
You do not owe anyone a picture-perfect holiday. Caregiving is a full-time job. When you are looking for end-of-life care for a parent, you quickly realize that energy is a limited resource.

The Adjustment: Instead of a massive feast, consider a smaller, intimate gathering.
The Value: Prioritizing quality time over elaborate decorations ensures you have the emotional bandwidth to simply sit and hold your loved one's hand.
Always remember, connection matters more than decorations.
II. Permission to Cry or to Smile

Sometimes being nearby is the comfort that matters most

It is common to wonder, "Is it normal to laugh when someone is dying?" The answer is yes.

Grief experts and the National Cancer Institute affirm that human emotions come in waves. You can feel profound sadness and still find joy in a shared memory.

Emotional Health: Allowing yourself to laugh does not mean you are in denial. It means you are coping. This balance is a core part of Agape's holistic hospice support we provide to families.

Let each person in the family react in their own way. No one is getting graded. You are allowed to remember your loved one and Agape Hospice will stand with you through that journey.
III.  Permission to turn down the volume around you
For families managing dementia or Alzheimer’s, the noise of a holiday party can trigger agitation rather than joy.

Our Strategy: We've been in this field for quite a while and as experts in dementia hospice care, we recommend creating a "quiet zone."

The Benefit: Reducing noise levels can help manage anxiety and even physical pain, which is a key goal of palliative care at home.

It is perfectly acceptable to tell guests:  "We are keeping visits short and quiet to keep Mom comfortable."

Caregivers need personal time to recharge as well

Love the Patient & Support the Caregiver
Here are 3 Ways to Pitch In:

IV. Permission to Ask for Help When You Require it.
Caregiver burnout often spikes in December, but you do not have to carry the heavy load alone. You do not have to cook, host, or entertain because it is “the holidays.”

Ask your family to help with small tasks:

“Brother, can you sit with Dad so I can nap for twenty-five minutes”
“Can you please bring the groceries instead of dessert?”

These tiny actions can help you focus better on providing the best care to your loved one.

The greatest gift is time spent together

You do not have to wait until you fall apart.  We try to notice when you look tired, check in on how you are really doing, and step in where we can so you are not carrying this season by yourself.
Finding a reliable local hospice team means you have partners who handle the logistics,
